I note from your site that you say inulin is safe. I visited an allergy site and found that some people may be allergic to inulin and become ill. Do you know that inulin is safe?

Ms Peacock, this is not an 'allergy site'. You may wish to contact the manufacturers of inulin and FOS for information. Certainly some of the European manufacturers have extensive information on safety.

I will try to post a considered response over the next day or so.

I note that you have not given an E-mail address. For this reason and because of the possibility of missuse of this forum I will password protect it over the next day or so.

Ms Peacock sorry for delay in responding. I suspect that you are referring to the work of Gay-Crosier F., Schreiber G., Hauser C.(2000) Anaphylaxis from Inulin in Vegetables and Processed Food. N Engl J Med 342:1372. http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/short/342/18/1372" rel="nofollow -  .  For all practical purposes inulin may be regarded as safe. Obviously there are risks in life and some individuals can experience life threating reactions to consuming sea-food, dairy products, nuts etc. Hopefully other with more knowledge and experience in this area will respond?

More recently Fux et. al. (2005) have reported an anaphylactic reaction after 4 minutes of inulin infusion during a carefully controlled experiment thus confirming that inulin has the potential to promote extreme allergic reactions.
