There is currently a renewed interest in using bacteriophages as alternatives to antibiotics (to kill pathogens) or to supplement conventional therapy.

Biofilms can be difficult to deal with. There is increasing interest in using phages e.g. the P100 listeria phage to kill listeria and other pathogens in biofilms. The P100 phage has been approved for use in Australia and New Zealand, making it the first bacteriophage product for food safety to be permitted for use in Australasia. The phage, formulated  in a commercial product, has been approved for application to ready to eat products, meat, seafood and cheese. The P100 phage (in a commercial preparation) has also been approved for food use by  the FDA (Food and Drug Administration, USA) and the USDA (US Department of Agriculture).
