Percentage Difference Calculations
The percentage difference calculator finds the absolute value (regardless of sign) of the change in value for any two numbers that belong to the same category. Percentage difference is calculated when the difference in percentage between two numbers is required. Note this is different than the more common calculation of the % increase (or decrease) between two numbers.
The order that the numbers is entered does not matter as we are simply dividing the difference between two numbers by the average of the two numbers. Note the difference from the calculation of the relative difference (percentage change) from one number to a new number.
Percentage Difference Formula
Percentage difference is the absolute value of the change in value, divided by the average of the 2 numbers (numbers are added and divided by 2), multiplied by 100. This is expressed as % difference. Note that the ABS function is used to make negative numbers positive using Excel.
